Machine Shop Grinder

This is actually an engine lathe and not a grinder. The operation being performed is turning between centers - a process used to generate precision cylindrical objects (primarily of metal). The engine lathe is more modern than some of the other lathes shown in machine tool photographs that depict overhead belt drives. With the advent of reliable electric motors overhead drives were phased out.
